Unusual Events Of The Olympic Games

You will be surprised about some of the odd and even weird events that have been part of the Olympic Games at some time. In fact, some of the sports that debuted were never attempted as an Olympic sport again. These are only a couple examples of the discontinued events has been part of the Games.

In 1900 the swimming obstacle race was introduced. This unusual event had participants climbing over poles and under boats.
The event took place in the River Seine, so the competitors also had to contend with the current.

Between 1900 and 1920 tug of war was introduced as a track and field event. This may seem like an unusual Olympic sport, but the ancient Greeks held the same event in 500 BC.

Also in 1900, live pigeon shooting was introduced as an Olympic game. This event only lasted one year for many different reasons. The program turned out to be quite messing, leaving over 300 dead birds scattered on the Olympics field.

During the 1896, 1904 and 1906 Olympics, the one handed lifting event was introduced for men only. Participants were allowed only one hand for lifting heavy objects. The lifters were allowed three attempts before being disqualified. They had to perform lifts with each hand, with the winner determined from the combined score of both hands.
